Every day we hear thousands of sounds. Hearing loss may happen gradually over time and may just be accepted as a ‘fact of getting older’. Often it goes unnoticed.
One of the first signs of hearing loss is often an inability to hear and understand speech in noisy environments. Because of this slow progression, many adults do not readily acknowledge their hearing loss.
Audiologists are not surprised to hear that the spouse or significant other has been frustrated by the hearing loss long before the individual with the hearing loss even acknowledges it.
However, hearing loss can make the brain work harder, straining to hear and working to fill in the gaps. This may be at the expense of other brain functions. A recent long-term study done by John Hopkins University showed that for older adults with hearing loss, the use of hearing aids was able to reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
