Kitty Mathis-Shildt, MS, RD will be the speaker at Kare Bears Presents on April 26th at 11am in the Eagle’s Nest Ballroom. Kitty is a retired registered dietitian nutritionist. She received her dietetics degree and master of nutritional science degree at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Kitty will be presenting current guidelines for taking over the counter vitamins and supplements. Dietary supplements can be beneficial for maintaining good health. HOWEVER, dietary supplements can be dangerous when not taken in the proper dosage and/or combined with certain prescription medications.
The common misconception among the general population is that since these products are available over the counter they are always safe and “more is better”. This is not necessarily true. Proper dosage and making good choices is very important. In 2015, there was an estimated 23,000 ER visits attributed to events related to dietary supplements and in 2019 almost 70,000 calls were made to the US poison control centers related to supplements, herbal preparations and homeopathic treatments.
Kitty will give specific dosages and recommend specific lab tested brand names for some of the more commonly used supplements among the senior population.
Hope to see you there!
