Being a caregiver is a very difficult and demanding task and it is easy to neglect one’s own health when caring for a loved one. From time to time, caregivers need to take time off from caregiving responsibilities to relieve stress and prevent burnout. That is why respite care is so important.
Respite care is provided in a variety of ways. Generally, someone comes to the home and cares for your loved one, however, there are other choices one can make in order to be relieved of caregiving duties for a short time. That is the area that I’m addressing in this article.
I just recently toured the Foundation for Senior Living Adult Day Services in Tolleson. Frankly, I thought it would be quite depressing but to my surprise I found it to be quite delightful. It is a relatively new facility with an outside patio and a wide variety of recreational activities. Hot and nutritious meals are catered by St. Joseph’s Hospital and a registered nurse is on duty Monday through Friday. One can go as little as one day a week or 5 days a week. The center also offers a transportation program that allows your loved one to be picked up and returned to your home at the end of the day. An Enrollment Agreement with the Social Worker is required which includes the level of care assessment and the determination of the corresponding charge for that level of care. It is at this time you can select additional services such as transportation and personal care. The facility is located at 9555 W. Van Buren in Tolleson. Phone # is 602-532-2979.
Another choice is a short-stay overnight program.
The La Loma Care Center is open to the public and it provides temporary care so that care-givers can take time off to rest, vacation or tend to necessary business. Three nutritious menu-selected meals, medication administration, assistance with activities of daily living and planned activities are included in the daily rate. The stay can be as short as one night. The facility is located at 14260 Denny Boulevard in Litchfield Park. For more information, please call 623-537-7400.
To all the caregivers in PebbleCreek, please take time for yourself and remember that you can’t help your loved one if you are ill.
These are just a few of many resources that are available to you. It is important to note that Kare Bears does not endorse the places mentioned in this article but merely provides the information. If you wish to get resources for care at home, please refer to the resources on the Kare Bears Website at www.karebears.org. There is a wealth of information out there so stay tuned and learn details about another resource in the “Bear Facts” section of the October Post .
